Over-Powdered Shells

Made for the GDevelop Big Jam, I set out to learn a new game engine and make a game for the theme Overpowered! When coming up with ideas wanted to stray away from the obvious of having a superhero/godlike character and so came up with the idea what if the bullets were overpowered.

Blast Away!

Using only the power of your shotgun traverse this difficult platformer and show the world your skills!

Mechanics Breakdown:

The Movement:

  • When players begin playing the game they will find that the gun follows where they point their mouse and that there are no traditional movement keys

  • Players upon clicking will see that their character is launched in the opposite direction they are aiming

  • The movement is explicitly made to be so easy to figure out anyone can do it even none traditional gamers

  • The lack of controls to learn removes much of the initial barrier for entry and helps to get players straight into the loop

The Progression:

  • Players upon coming into contact with a coin will collect it moving their progression bar forward

  • Once the progression bar is filled the level will be completed and players will be prompted to enter their score. They will then move to the next level.

  • The focus on coin collection allows players to have a sense of agency in how they move around the space they are provided in a game where their inputs are limited.

  • The inclusion of high scores on a level by level bases play into players competitive / completionist side and keeps them playing the same content over and over again striving for a higher score.

  • Overall the inclusion of these features/progress has lead to players enjoying the

The Challenge:

  • Beginning the game players will be presented with a room where they cannot fail. This gives them an opportunity to learn the main mechanic (the movement) in a safe environment and not be discouraged

  • Each level following this will introduce a new obstacle that will be introduced on an “easy mode” where players will interact with it slightly, and then continue to grow more experienced with as these obstacles will persist and expand throughout subsequent levels

  • The inclusion of these obstacles gives players of all skill ranges a challenge to overcome and make decisions based upon.

  • Levels also include a timer that directly effects the players score. This means that players who are shooting for the high scores will have to truly master the games movement, and knowledge of the map in order to achieve their goals.
