Strange Cravings

Made for the Tri-jam game jam I was given the task to make a game based around the theme “Strange Cravings”. I took this to have a food theme and took inspiration from We Love Katamari for my gameplay.

Aquire Mass!

In this game you play as a very hungry man. Upon finding his fridge empty he ventures outside to a nearby park and finds an abandoned picnic. He is a picky eater and demands to eat only one type of food at a time. Fill up that hungry tummy in Strange Cravings.

Mechanics Breakdown:

The Cravings:

  • When players begin playing the game food will be randomly spawned at select locations

  • Players will be given a designated “craving” which is depicted in the top right corner of the screen with an image.

  • To assist players with finding their “craving” in the world, the food actors have arrows that float above them and move to catch the players eye

  • Upon eating the food players are rewarded by:

    • Growing larger

    • Seeing their mass score increase

    • Hearing the good eating sound

  • Upon eating a food that is not their “craving” players are discouraged by:

    • Shrinking down

    • Seeing their mass score decrease

    • Hearing the negative throw up sound

  • Upon eating all their “cravings” players will here a small chime and the cycle will update by giving them a new craving.

  • The feedback in the game all moves the player towards using the fun gameplay controls to carefully maneuver around the world and eat all the food without ever having to be explicitly told “do this to win”
